There is a William R. Taylor in the 1840 Census for Yalobusha Co., MS (img. 9) which is probably the right person. There are a few more children listed than I can account for, but possibly they belonged to someone else, or maybe some had died by 1850. It shows that he owned two slaves, a young woman and a child. A James Taylor, possibly his brother, lived next door.

The 1850 Slave Schedules show that William Taylor owned two black male slaves, ages 21 and 22.

According to the Goodspeed sketch of Christopher Columbus Webb, William Taylor came to Arkansas in 1856, and was a Confederate veteran (although he would have been nearly 60 years old in 1861). Possible Civil War record (not proven):

Hardy's Regiment, Co. I
TAYLOR, W. Pvt Enl 15 Jun 1863 at Nashville, AR. Present Feb 1864. In hospital at Shreveport, LA 4-16 Apr 1865. *Co I, 19th AR Inf

Or this:

Hardy's Regiment, Co. K
TAYLOR, WILLIAM Pvt Enl 1 Dec 1863 at Camp Bragg, AR. Present sick Feb 1864.

These records could refer to William's son (also named William) who was born in 1844.

Wife Catherine, apparently a second marriage. I believe her name was Caroline rather than Catherine, since this is the name given in the 1880 Census. A number of children with surname of Farley are living in the household, probably Catherine's (or Caroline's) children by her former marriage. I found a William Farley family with wife Caroline and same children's names in the 1850 Census, AR, Hempstead Co.

William R. Taylor 76 TN NC NC
Caroline Taylor 69 TN VA VA
Wife's name was Catherine in 1860 census. I believe Caroline is the correct name.
